MARQUETTE — A Gwinn man was injured after his vehicle struck a power pole on M-553, just south of Marquette County Road NF in Sands Township at 9:25 a.m. Monday.

Eugene Mahaffey, 33, was driving northbound on M-553 in a Ford F-150 when he left the east side of the roadway, “possibly due to a medical condition,” a press release from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office states.

Mahaffey’s vehicle traveled through a stand of trees, striking a power pole. He suffered head injuries and was transported to UP Health System-Marquette for further evaluation.

Upon Mahaffey’s release from the hospital, he was arrested on a pre-existing warrant unrelated to the incident and lodged at the Marquette County Jail, officials said.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
