Youth camp scholarships available

LANSING — Michigan United Conservation Clubs has announced an opportunity to get kids to the Michigan Out-of-Doors Youth Camp through the Riley Wilderness Youth Camp Scholarships.

With support from the Riley Foundation and Safari Club International-Novi Chapter, each summer 80 new campers are awarded a scholarship to spend at the Cedar Lake Outdoor Center.

Two scholarships are available depending on the age of the camper. One is the Riley Wilderness Junior Overnight Camp for kids ages 9-11, which will take place July 26-July 31. This camp offers campers the opportunity to learn survival skills, orienteering, archery, canoeing, shooting sports and fishing in a safe and positive environment.

The Riley Wilderness Advanced Overnight Camp for kids age 12-14 will run Aug. 2-8. This week-long adventure gives campers an opportunity to develop their skills as big-game hunters. Throughout the week, campers will work with experts in animal identification and tracking, while learning valuable hunting techniques and strategies.

Youths must meet one or more of the following criteria in order to be eligible for a scholarship: having no experience in hunting and the outdoors, lack family financial resources to attend a program of this nature, lack an active mentor to expose them to outdoor activities, and not having yet earned a Michigan hunter safety certificate.

Scholarship applications are available on the Safari Club International-Novi website at www.sci-novi.com. Click “First for Education.”
