MARQUETTE — At 6:30 tonight, the Peter White Public Library will host a meeting of its science fiction book group Klava Klub at The Crib, located at 401 N. Third St., Marquette.

For this meeting, the group will discuss Octavia Butler’s novel “Parable of the Sower.” In this first of Butler’s Earthseed books, climate change and economic crises have led to the breakdown of society. People are only safe if they group together, and then existence is still fragile. Lauren, who suffers from hyperempathy, a condition that causes her to experience the feelings of others as if they were her own, lives with her family in a walled compound outside of Los Angeles. When it is destroyed by fire, she and others seek refuge in the north.
