McCommons will present

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library invites patrons to a presentation by James McCommons celebrating the release of his new book, “Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room on the lower level of the library.

“Camera Hunter” recounts George Shiras’s life and craft as he refined his camera techniques and advocated for the protection of wildlife. Taken with crude equipment, his black-and-white photographs celebrated American wildlife at a time when many species were going extinct because of habitat loss and unrestrained hunting.

As a congressman and lawyer, Shiras joined forces with Theodore Roosevelt who helped shape the conservation movement.

James McCommons is a professor in the English Department at Northern Michigan University, specializing in journalism as well as nature and essay writing. Prior to teaching, we worked as a journalist covering ecological, environmental, and travel topics. He has a BA in creative writing, an MA in journalism and an MS in environmental sciences.

He is also a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity for book sales and signings with the author and Snowbound Books. There is no admission fee to attend.
