Finnish folk quartet set to perform
MARQUETTE — Finnish folk quartet Kardemimmit will perform Thursday at Northern Michigan University.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Forest Roberts Theatre. It is presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU and sponsored by the Finn Grand Fest 2005 Legacy Fund. Tickets are $10 advance/$12 door for the general public and $5 advance/$7 for students.
Formed in 1999, the quartet consists of Maija Pokela, Jutta Rahmel, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius, who all play the Finnish national instrument, the kantele. Alongside 15-and 38-stringed kanteles, singing plays a big role in Kardemimmit’s music, where original pieces with a modern approach maintain a strong foundation in Finnish, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions.
Kardemimmit previously performed at NMU in October 2017.
