Jazz concert to be held at NMU

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University Music Department presents the first jazz concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Reynolds Recital Hall.

The concert will feature performances by the NMU Jazz Band, NMU Jazz Combo and the NMU Wildcat Combo.

Repertoire will include classic pieces by composers Sammy Nestico, Matt Harris, Fred Sturm, Pat Metheny and more.

Admission is free.

Book group set to meet Tuesday

MARQUETTE –The Peter White Library Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Dandelion Cottage Room at the library to discuss “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles.

In 1922, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov is pronounced an “unrepentant aristocrat” and sentenced to house arrest in his home-away-from-home, the Metropol Hotel. After he is marched across Red Square, Rostov is warned that if he ever steps outside the Metropol, he’ll be shot. Rostov vows to live his reduced life to the fullest, remembering the words of his godfather, the Grand Duke: “if a man does not master his circumstances, he is bound to be mastered by them.”

Marine Corps League to meet

MARQUETTE — The Lake Superior Detachment 764 of the Marine Corps League announces its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Hall at 700 W. Bluff St., Marquette.

In addition to the monthly business this meeting will be the kick-off for the 2019 Toys for Tots Campaign. All Marines and FMF Corpsmen are invited to attend, join and participate in the league’s activities. “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

‘The Public’ screened Tuesday

MARQUETTE — Bring lunch and get together with other movie lovers to watch “The Public” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room on the lower level of the Library. Closed captioning will be on to ensure access for all.

Cincinnati is experiencing its coldest weather of the year, and there are not enough shelters to house all of the homeless people. As a result, some of them decide that they are going to spend the night in the public library. Starring Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling and Emilio Estevez, this 2019 Drama is rated PG-13 and runs 119 minutes.

“The Public” won four awards from the Film Club’s The Lost Weekend Awards: Best Actor–Emilio Estevez, Best Director–Emilio Estevez, Best Supporting Actor–Jeffrey Wright, and Best Ensemble Cast.

Tree, wreath registrations to open

MARQUETTE — Before you know it, the holiday season will be here.

In preparation, the Peter White Public Library will begin accepting tree and wreath registrations for its 2019 Winter Wonderland Walk on Tuesday through Nov. 22.

Interested participants can find forms in the library’s circulation lobby and return them to the circulation desk, or they may register on-line at www.pwpl.info.

There is no admission fee to participate.
