Walking to be celebrated

MARQUETTE — Walking is an exercise that can be done by almost everyone, costs next to nothing and is beneficial for body, mind and spirit.

According to a press release from the North Country Trail Hikers Chapter, walking fosters weight loss, increases metabolism, promotes a healthy heart, increases self-esteem, tones muscles, improves self-image, increases energy, promotes stronger bones and joints, releives stress, strengthens the immune system, and helps reduce the risk of high-blood pressure.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, all are welcome to Celebrate Walking in Marquette with the North Country Trail Hikers Chapter of the North Country Trail Associaion at the corner of Lakeshore Boulevard and the driveway into Mattson Lower Harbor Park right next to the fully accessible North Country Trail/Marquette Multi-purpose Pathway.

The group will be celebrating Marquette as a NCTA Trail Town, the 6th Annual North Country National Scenic Trail Day, the 100th Anniversary of Michigan State Parks, National Public Lands Day and the end of Michigan Trails Week.

The public is invited to chat about the North CountryTrail, make a donation to support efforts maintaining, building, promoting and protecting the NCT, join the local chapter, purchase local NCT Hikers merchandise and sign up to win a free NCTH T-shirt.

Then walk in either direction on the trail, enjoying the beautiful Lake Superior shoreline through or north of downtown. Those working on the 2019 Hike 100 Challenge, add some miles to help reach your goal.
