Negaunee City Band to perform

NEGAUNE — The Negaunee City Band plays its final concert of the 2019 season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.

Music from two musicals will be highlighted, with selections from “Oliver!” including “Consider Yourself,” “Where Is Love,” “As Long As He Needs Me,” and “I’d Do Anything.” Later in the program there will be a medley of numbers from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” featuring “Jacob and Sons,” “Any Dream Will Do,” Close Every Door,” and “Go, Go, Go, Joseph.”

“Adrenaline Engines” features thundering percussion, memorable melodies, and frenetic energy, while another lively piece is the “Orpheus Overture,” with a spirited opening, lush lyrical themes, and a rousing can-can for the grand finale.

“Salute to a Hero” opens and closes with a brilliant brass fanfare, while “Toccata di Ferro” composed by the band’s director, Brandon Nelson, will feature the Timekeepers Quintet.

This week’s marches are great examples of the genre. “The Dam Busters” was written for the 1955 British World War II movie of the same name, which commemorates a string of successful bombings of German dams. “Gloria” was composed by F. H. Losey, a music adviser for Edison’s phonograph company and Henry Ford’s orchestra. “The National Game” was the result when baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis took advantage of Sousa’s love of baseball and asked him to compose a march for the 50th anniversary of the National League.

As always, the concert and the season will conclude with “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
