Trappers convention in Escanaba

ESCANABA — Expert trapper Jeff Dunlap will once again give a presentation at the 57th annual U.P. Trappers Convention /Outdoor Expo. He will be joined by at least 7 other outdoor experts who will be presenting as well. Dunlap has trapped in Michigan, Louisiana, Arizona, Ohio, Indiana, Alabama and Texas. His favorite method of operation is to “state -hop” and go where the fur is plentiful. His capture numbers are outstanding. Numbers such as the following prove he is an expert in his field: One season: 1,105 muskrats, 495 raccoons, 76 otter, 326 beaver, 25 grey fox, 21 bobcats, 3 red fox, and 18 mink, and many coyotes. He traps full-time 7 months of the year and in his non-trapping time he travels the country speaking at conventions, producing Dunlap’s Lures (which will be available for purchase at the event), and appears on numerous trapping shows on television and radio. His demo (which will be concentrated on coyotes and state hopping) is scheduled for 2 p.m. (all times EDT) on Saturday.

This family friendly event will take place at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba Friday and Saturday. Hours are, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 for both days with youngsters under 12 admitted free. Camping is available on the grounds. Many food vendors will be present offering a wide variety of local favorites. Hundreds of vendors/tailgaters will be on hand offering their goods for sale (with many offering “convention special” prices). Trap dealers, hunting/fishing suppliers, crafters, firearms, quilters, and lots of knife dealers, to name a few, will be in attendance.

Organizers of this event make a great effort to offer something of interest to not only trappers, but all outdoorsman and their family members. Raffles, kids games, supervised pellet shooting and archery and free fishing pond, new items and inventions, and this year, one whole building is dedicated to quilters.

Rummage, bake sale in Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — A Fabric Rummage Sale and Bake Sale are planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

Trinity Lutheran’s quilters have disbanded after many years of quilting for Lutheran World Relief, and are sharing their abundance by having a fabric and notions rummage sale. The free-will donations made during the sale will assist the quilters’s missions projects and youth programming. There will be a silent auction for a sewing machine. Shop indoors in the fellowship hall, enjoy a cup of coffee and bake sale.

The church is located at 414 E. Ridge St., Ishpeming.
