Tai Chi workshop Saturday

MARQUETTE — From 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, an introductory workshop to Tai Chi will be held at the Hope Connection Center, 927 W. Fair Ave., Maquette.

Tai Chi is a mind/body practice that originated in China in the 8th Century A.D. and is now appropriated in medical centers across North America to reduce stress, improve balance, and regulate the immune system.

There is no cost for this event. It is sponsored by The Cedar Tree Institute, a nonprofit organization which provides services and initiates projects in the areas of mental health, religion, and the environment.

44th softball tourney planned

CURTIS — Curtis will welcome softball players from all over Michigan Saturday and Sunday for the 44th Annual Swamper Softball Tournament. The tournament is at the Portage Township Recreation Area. There will be a concession stand.

Art project in Big Bay to start

BIG BAY — Summer Art Camp 2019 in Big Bay, the Art Garage with Liberty Children’s Art Project for grades 1-9, is planned from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 26.

The offerings “Think like an Artist!” Shadow Box Creation, Printmaking, Paper Sculpture and Clay, use a variety of chosen art methods/materials to create unique art work for younger students (1st- 4th) with artists Carol Phillips and Ben Pawlowski and “Just Clay — Throwing on the Potters Wheel, Carving in Clay and Clay Sculpture” for 5th-9th grade students with ceramic artist Sarah Byers.

These classes will all meet at the Powell Township School Outdoor Art Garage, 101 Deutsch, Big Bay. Come to some or all days.

These classes are free of charge to Powell Township children but open to all children in the area ($25/week, $5 for one-day workshop) thanks to the generous support of Powell Township School, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Marquette Breakfast Rotary and the Hirvonen Foundation for sponsoring the camp this year.
