Celebration of Weddings event

SKANDIA — As the congregation looks back on 125 years of ministry, Emanuel Lutheran Church of Skandia invites the community to a Celebration of Weddings at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The program will include a presentation of Scandinavian wedding traditions by Gisele Duehring, displays of wedding memorabilia, and the sharing stories. Refreshments including wedding cake will be served.

Those married in the church, members, and others in the area are invited to attend and to bring wedding memorabilia for display: pictures, wedding dresses, bulletins, guest books, or other items. Display items should be labeled and, if possible, brought to the church today between 10 a.m. and noon.

Bothwell set to hold orientation

MARQUETTE — Bothwell Middle School will welcome incoming sixth grade students at orientation programs Monday and Tuesday.

Current fifth graders from Sandy Knoll and Graveraet Elementary schools will visit on Monday; fifth grade students from Cherry Creek and Superior Hills Elementary schools will visit on Tuesday.

The program will include musical performances, information about Bothwell, a question and answer session, and tours of the school led by sixth grade teachers. Prospective students not currently attending MAPS are invited to the Monday session and should call the Bothwell Middle School office at 225-4262 to reserve a spot.

Traditional arts gathering set

ISHPEMING — The Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve’s Nature School has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to host a three-day traditional arts gathering along the Yellow Dog River west of Marquette County Road 510 on May 23-25.

Resident artists from the U.P. will come together in a wilderness setting to share their skills and talents with schools and students from Marquette Alternative High School, Powell Township School and the public on the third day.
