Children’s coalition conference set

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Children’s Coalition will host its annual conference, “Take Action,” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3 at Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Complex.

Regional speakers will present sessions that help participants move from awareness to action regarding issues facing children and families.

Keynote speaker Grace Helms Kotre, MSW, is a certified mindfulness instructor, social justice educator and founder of Power to Be, LCC. Her presentations include “Enhancing Youth Work with Mindfulness” and “Mindful Compassion as the Foundation for Growth.”

Additional learning session topics include policy actions on behalf of children; why our children need nature and how we can share it with them; adverse childhood experiences and suicide risk; helping children develop resiliency, and developing literate children.

The conference is open to everyone and is especially appropriate for human services professionals including those in child welfare, mental health including substance abuse, public health, school counseling, courts, tribal partners, religious organizations and foster parents.

Registration for the conference, including lunch, is $25 for U.P. Children’s Coalition members and $30 for nonmembers. Registration is open through April 26 at www.upchildrenscoalition.org.

The coalition is a non-partisan advocacy organization which identifies and addresses issues impacting children and families in the Upper Peninsula.
