Alger County Chamber dinner event

MUNISING — Tickets are now available for this year’s annual Alger County Chamber of Commerce dinner.

The award for Business of the Year is going to Peoples State Bank, an organization that has been in business over 100 years.

The date is April 30 at the Moose Lodge in Munising, with social hour at 5 p.m. and presentations at 6 p.m. with dinner to follow.

Tickets are $35 each and are available at the chamber office, 129 E. Munising Ave. (across from Subway). Tickets also can be purchased over the phone at 387-2138.

League of Women Voters to meet

MARQUETTE — The monthly meeting of the League of Women Voters of Michigan, Marquette County Member-At-Large State Unit, will be from 6-7:30 p.m. May 1.

The LWV is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Meetings are held at Peter White Public Library, lower level, Studio 1. The public is welcome to attend this and all monthly meetings. For further information, email dthompsona@gmail.com

Community meal held in Marquette

MARQUETTE — Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette will host its monthly community meal at 5:30 p.m. May 1.

DNR to hold ORV instructor academy

ESCANABA — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is holding a three-day academy for people wanted to be an off-road vehicle safety instructor.

Academies will be offered June 7-9 in Escanaba at the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds and May 3-5 at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center in Roscommon.

All volunteer ORV instructors must attend a three-day academy — all expenses paid — to learn policy and procedure, classroom management and teaching concepts. Attendees will explore many aspects of ORV operation, including basic hands-on skills on off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, utility-type vehicles and winching recovery equipment. Active instructors also are invited to brush up on knowledge and skills and experience changes in equipment.

Each academy is limited to 24 students, and enrollment is first come, first served. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school degree or GED and have no misdemeanor convictions within the past three years. They also must not have had a felony conviction and no convictions that resulted in the revocation of ORV-operation privileges within the last five years.

Job fairs to be held in Alger County

MUNISING — UPWARD Talent Council Michigan Works! will be hosting two job fairs in Alger County on May 2.

The first will be held at Alger Parks Recreation Department from 10 a.m. to noon and the second at the Munising Senior High School at 1-3 p.m.

Local employers will be interviewing potential candidates to fill open positions and will be hiring. Job fairs are a great opportunity to meet with hiring managers face-to-face, interview on-site, and create a lasting impression. Visit a local Michigan Works! American Job Center for a list of registered employers.
