O’Connor set to perform at NMU

MARQUETTE — Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor will perform as part of Northern Michigan University’s Siril Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds Recital Hall. Admission is free.

O’Connor originated the role of Federico Garcia Lorca in Osvaldo Golijov’s “Ainadamar.” She performed under the baton of conductor Robert Spano for Atlanta Symphony performances of the opera and a Grammy-winning Deutsche Grammophon recording.

Her discography also includes “Mahler’s Third Symphony” with Jaap van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, “Lieberson’s Neruda Songs” with Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony, “Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary” with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and “Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony” with Franz Welser-Most and the Cleveland Orchestra.

O’Connor will also be working with four vocal music students in an open master class at noon today in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Paint it UP! class held in Curtis

CURTIS — Paint it UP! Chalk Paint and Decoupage Vintage Tray Class will be offered at the Erickson Center for Arts in Curtis from 2-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Julie Primeaux is back for another chalk paint class. Create a decorative tray using reclaimed antique handles and wooden cupboard doors.

Primeaux will show participants how to put special touches on a tray, using chalk paint and Decoupage techniques.

The cost is $45 per person. Class fee includes all supplies and refreshments. Feel free to bring beverages. Class size is limited. Call the ECA office to sign up 906-586-9974.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser held

NEGAUNEE — On Saturday, the public is invited to a spaghetti dinner fundraiser upstairs of VFW 3165 at 208 Gold St. Negaunee, from 4:30-7 p.m.

A suggested donation of $8 will include spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, garlic bread, tossed salad, dessert and coffee.

Following the dinner downstairs, there will also be live entertainment by local musician Bobby Niemi from 7-10 p.m.

All proceeds go to help with veteran and families support programs.

Self defense courses to be held

MARQUETTE — A nine-hour self defense course is being offered for teen and adult women by Master Joyce Tredeau of the Spirit Warrior Karate Academy.

Tredeau is a sixth degree black belt and is Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) certified.

The classes will be on March 24, April 7 and April 14 from 1-4 p.m. at the Superior Dance Academy, 1500 W. Washington St., Marquette.

The $60 fee includes nine hours of training, a 60-page manual and a free lifetime return policy.

Advance care planning session

MARQUETTE — The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer an advance care planning workbook session at 1 p.m. April 4 at the Upper Peninsula Health Plan office on Washington Street.

The registration deadline is Monday.

Kate LaBeau, advance care planning program manager, will lead the discussion. This event is free to attend and open to the public.

LaBeau will discuss ways to explore choices, share with family and set health care goals for the future. Discussion will be followed by completing individual guide books to make choices count.
