NAMI to hold support group

MARQUETTE — The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette offers free, confidential peer support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

A support group will gather at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette. For more information call 906-360-7107, visit www.namiam.org, or follow NAMI on Facebook.

In case of bad weather, if Northern Michigan University cancels evening classes, the NAMI meeting will also be canceled.

Omo the Hobo program to be held

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Vasa Lodge will present a program about the late Upper Peninsula musician and recording artist Omo the Hobo, to be given by guest speaker Jack Bowers.

Omo was known for his many novelty recordings among others throughout his career. The program is free to the public and will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette.

The Vasa Lodge is devoted to the celebration of Scandinavian culture and is open to anyone of that heritage and their spouses. For more information call Bob at 226-7273.

Community Conversation event

CHATHAM — A Community Conversation on Tourism will take place in Chatham on Thursday.

This event is sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council and the Sustainable Ecotourism Organization of Northern Michigan University.

People are invited to voice views on tourism in Alger County. Organizers would like to hear all perspectives from area citizens. Does local tourism help you or harm you? What can be done to help all county citizens benefit from tourism?

Beekeeping Conference March 30

MARQUETTE — The second annual Upper Peninsula Beekeeping Conference will be March 30 at Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center.

Keynote speaker Mike Connor will talk about “Bees and Trees, in da U.P.” Following the keynote, concurrent sessions will offer topics for beginning beekeepers, as well as more experienced beekeepers. There are also sessions that will be of interest to non-beekeepers and “wanna-bees”! The conference will include vendor rooms and a catered lunch.

Alex Kimmel to speak at NMU

MARQUETTE — On Friday, Alex Kimmel, an advocate for self-determination, will be speaking at 4 p.m. in Northern Michigan University’s Jamrich 1320 regarding living on the spectrum, the importance of inclusion and what neuroscience is known at this time about autism.

American Legion to host fish fry

MARQUETTE — American Legion Post 44 will host a fish fry at the post, 700 W. Bluff St., Marquette, from 5-7 p.m. Friday.

Whitefish or shrimp are available for $11 and chicken strips for $9. Meals come with a choice of baked potato or french fries and include salad bar.

This meal is open to the public.
