Celebration for preserve on tap

HARVEY — The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy will hold a celebration of the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve from 2-7 p.m. Saturday at the preserve and the Chocolay Township Marina.

Activities will include kids activities; live acoustic music, with participants allowed to bring their own instruments and play along; lawn games; a guided plant and history hike at 2 p.m.; a guided paddle and hike at 4 p.m.; and a potluck cookout at 5:30 p.m.

There also will be an adult/child team paddle “race” from the marina to the bayou dock and back at 3 p.m., with prizes. The cost for the race is $15 per team with on-site registration.

Rentable stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and canoes will available all day for $10 per boat, with personal flotation devices and paddles included.

Tickets to the event will be sold at the marina entrance for $15 per individual and $20 per family.

The event is a fundraiser for the preserve, located along Main Street in Harvey, to raise $20,000 in the next four years to ensure the long-term needs of the preserve. A dedication of the boardwalk to the donor’s name of choice will be given to anyone donating $100 or more Saturday or online at uplandconservancy.org.
