‘The Great Fire’ walking tour

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Regional History Center presents: 150th Anniversary of “The Great Fire” as a walking tour at 6:30 p.m. June 11.

Participants should meet at the Bell Tower at the end of Washington Street.

One of the most significant events in Marquette’s history was the great downtown fire of 1868. On the 150th anniversary of the inferno, join Jim Koski on a walking tour of the areas affected, find out where (and how) the fire started, how much damage it caused, and learn how the blaze shaped the downtown Marquette we know today. There is a $5 suggested donation for this event.

Community meal held June 6

MARQUETTE — Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette will host its monthly community meal at 5:30 p.m. June 6. All are welcome.

Belles to meet at Jasper Ridge

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming/Negaunee Belles meet at the Jasper Ridge Brewery in Ishpeming at noon June 7.

Facade Grant Program announced

L’ANSE –The L’Anse Downtown Development Authority announces the 12th edition of its Facade Grant Program.

First introduced in 2007, the Facade Grant Program of the Village of L’Anse Downtown Development Authority has awarded 56 grants to help improve many retail and commercial properties within the DDA district of L’Anse.

The five grants awarded every year for up to $2,500 each, are outright grants, no matching funds required. Past improvements have included remodeling, restoration of historic elements, siding and painting, window replacement and masonry cleaning and repair.

This year’s program deadline is June 8, and applications are available at the Village Office in downtown L’Anse. Call 524-6116 for more information.

Winners will be announced June 13.

MARSP to meet at Landmark Inn

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel will meet at the Landmark Inn at noon June 12.

Author Sonny Longtine will present the program called, “UP Magnificent Mansions and Courtly Cottages.” Longtine, a retired Upper Peninsula history and government teacher, has published five books about the U.P.

Children’s Fishing Derby June 9

HUMBOLDT — The annual Children’s Fishing Derby at the Humboldt Township Pond Recreation area on the corner of County Rd FNO and County Rd FA will be on June 9.

Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and fishing starts at 10. There is no cost for attendees.
