Barn dance at Ore Dock Brewery

MARQUETTE – A Spring Barn Dance will begin at 6 this evening at the Ore Dock Brewing Co. in Marquette.

All Proceeds benefit the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter. A $5 donation will be accepted at the door.

Music will be provided by The Bad Luck Lullabies, Sparrowtree and the Starlight Minstrels. Food will be provided by Dia De Los Tacos.

‘Senior’ prom to be held tonight

NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee Senior Center “Senior” Prom will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the center.

The dance will offer live music by the Hart Beats, door prizes, raffles and refreshments.

Formal attire is recommended, but is optional.

Tickets at the door are $8 a piece. Dinner is optional and costs an additional $4.

Special Memorial Day Event held

ISHPEMING – Working Families will hold a Workers Memorial Day Event in honor of workers who died on the job at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum in Ishpeming.

There will be a rally and vigil to commemorate those who have perished or suffered injuries or illness on the job.

A special tribute will be held in honor of Gary Hytinen, USWA member who died at the workplace.

MARQUETTE – In celebration of May as Mental Health month, there will be a public screening of the multi-award winning film “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Community room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller, the romantic drama is based on the novel of the same name written by Stephen Chbosky.

Flat Broke Blues Band to perform

MARQUETTE – The Flat Broke Blues Band will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Community room of Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

The live show will include discussion of various musical facets of the songs the band performs, including rhythm style, chord quality, rhythmic and melodic solos, bass line style and others. The band features original members guitarist/vocalist Walt Lindala and bassist/vocalist Mark Johnson. Spaghetti fundraiser to be held

MARQUETTE – A spaghetti fundraiser for the Superiorland Soccer Association’s U16 Red Bull boys travel team will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Marquette Elks Club in Marquette.

The cost is $6 and includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and a drink.

Tickets are available from U16 Red Bull players and coaches as well as at the door. Takeout will be available.

Photo contest held at Hudson’s

MARQUETTE – Hudson’s Classic Grill and Bar in Marquette is having a monthlong themed photo contest for the general public.

Entries must be 1950sto ’70s themed photos that can feature costumes or props from the classic era.

HANCOCK – The Hancock Education Association is accepting applications for its scholarship for Hancock Central High School alumni.

Former Hancock students who are juniors or seniors in the education program at a university are eligible.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2014-15 school year. The HEA has awarded $2,500 in scholarships in the last seven years. Lyceum program held on Sunday

ISHPEMING – The Friends of the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library will sponsor a lyceum program at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Ray Leverton Community Room on the lower level of the library.

Local author Dan Fountain will be giving a presentation on gold and silver mining in Marquette County.

Basing on his new book, “Michigan Gold & Silver: Mining in the Upper Peninsula,” Fountain will recount tales of some of the earliest explorations for the precious metals.

From the shafts sunk for silver at Marquette’s Presque Isle in the 1840s, to the silver-lead boom near Silver Lake in the 1860s, to the gold rush in the Ishpeming area in the 1860s, the stories will be illustrated with images from Fountain’s collection of historical photos and documents. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Library.

Community jam at Peter White

MARQUETTE – A community jam celebrating traditional folk music will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Community room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Guitar, fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, bass players and singers are invited to try their hand at great old time tunes by Peter, Paul and Mary, the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and others.

Rock and mineral club to meet

Movie Magic holds ’42’ screening

CALUMET – The Calumet Theatre’s Movie Magic Film Series will show the 2013 movie “42” at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Calumet Theatre, Calumet.

The movie is the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American baseball player in Major League Baseball.

In 1946, Robinson breaks the unspoken color line and endures unrelenting racism as he follows his passion – baseball.

National Poetry Month celebrated

MARQUETTE – Celebrate National Poetry Month at the Peter White Public Library with Andrea Scarpino and Matthew Gavin Frank at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Shiras room of Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

Andrea Scarpino is the author of the poetry collection Once, Then (Red Hen Press, 2014) and the chapbook The Grove Behind (Finishing Line Press). Beginning photography workshop

MARQUETTE – A workshop for beginning photographers will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28, May 12 and June 30 at the Northern Center for Lifelong Learning, Marquette.

‘Sing and Dance up a Storm’

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s Lake Effect Show Choir will “sing and dance up a storm” at its upcoming weather-themed show at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms, Marquette.

MARQUETTE?- Law Enforcement have joined together with the Women’s Center/Harbor House to kick off the month with their Teal Ribbon Campaign, Police will show their support against Sexual Violence in Marquette County by displaying a teal ribbon on their vehicles.

On Tuesday at the National Guard Armory front steps will be the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Event, where community men wear high heels to show their support against sexual violence towards women, while the rest of the community participates walking or cheering!

‘Faculty and Friends’ Jazz Combo

MARQUETTE – Dr. Mark Flaherty and the NMU “Faculty and Friends” Jazz Combo will have a presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Community room at the Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

This presentation will feature classic repertoire recorded by artists such as Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, Shorty Rogers, and others. Dr. Mark Flaherty, Associate Professor of Music at NMU, will explain the origins and characteristics of the “cool” jazz style, and discuss its relationship to “bebop” and other modern jazz styles. ‘My Berlin Kitchen’ at Tasty Reads

MARQUETTE – Tasty Reads, a book group for readers who love to cook, will meet to discuss “My Berlin Kitchen” by Luisa Weiss from noon to 1 p.m., Monday at the Shiras room in Peter White Public Library, Marquette.

Luisa Weiss was working in New York when she decided to cook her way through her massive recipe collection.

Public memorial for Vandament

MARQUETTE -A public memorial celebrating the life of former Northern Michigan University President William E. Vandament is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday in Vandament Arena, Marquette.

It will feature the pep band, remarks from university and community representatives and the presentation of a plaque that will hang in the arena named for NMU’s tenth president. Vandament passed away last April at the age of 81.

He started as a psychology instructor before embarking on a long career as a university administrator.

While serving as Northern’s president from 1991-97, he implemented the flat-rate tuition structure that still exists and guided the university through significant budget reductions in the wake of a drop in state support.

Despite the cuts, he was well respected on campus and in the community. He valued transparency, encouraged input and was a unifying force during tough financial times.

‘The Kite Runner’ to be screened

This American Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated drama tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from Kabul, who is tormented by the guilt of abandoning his friend Hassan, the son of his father’s servant.

The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet military intervention, the mass exodus of Afghan refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime. An aging, booze-addled father, played by Bruce Dern, makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son, played by Will Forte, in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.

Six time Oscar nominee, “Nebraska” is a father and son road trip told with deadpan humor and a unique visual style.

It is ultimately the story of a son trying to get through to a father he doesn’t understand.

Howe to host art demonstration

MARQUETTE – Elizabeth Howe will be demonstrating and discussing the importance of sketching and drawing in the lives of artists and non-artists alike at 7 p.m. Monday in the Marquette Arts and Culture Center, Marquette.

Red Tail Ring to perform Sunday

MARQUETTE – Red Tail Ring, Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp, will perform at4 p.m. CST Sunday at the Second Sunday Folk Dance at the Fortune Lake Camp in Crystal Falls.

Hosts Bette and Dean Premo will perform a short opening set with Carrie, Emma, and Susan Dlutkowski.

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University Symphonic Band and Orchestra will share the stage for a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU.

The NMU Symphonic Band will perform Arabesque by Hazo, Little English Girl by Cese, Gustav Holst’s popular work, Second Suite in F for Military Band and The Music of Quirks by Brant Karrick. NMU music professor Stephen Grugin directs the band. The NMU Orchestra, directed by Barbara Rhyneer, will perform Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, a narrative based on the life and heroism of a 16th-century Dutch nobleman, the Count of Egmont.

Open auditions held for ‘Rent’

MARQUETTE – The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council is holding open auditions for its musical production of “Rent” from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Vista Theater in Negaunee.

“Rent” is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Boheme.”

The parts are for ages 17 and older and a large cast is needed. Be prepared to sing, dance and act at the audition.

Performance dates are June 12-14 and June 18-21.

‘All Is Lost’ at BYO?Dinner Theater

MARQUETTE – Peter White Public Library invites film fans to a BYO Dinner Theater screening of “All Is Lost” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room.

Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man, played by Robert Redford, wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Circle Awards winner, “All Is Lost” is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience. It was released in November, is rated PG and runs for 102 minutes.

Opera program presented at NMU

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University music students will present a program of arias and ensembles from various operas at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday in the Reynolds Recital Hall, Marquette.

The featured work will be Gary D. Belshaw’s 2010 short chamber opera, The Worst One Ever and excerpts from two Gilbert and Sullivan favorites, “The Sorcerer” and “The Mikado.” In the Belshaw opera, the action takes place in a college dorm where three coeds are expressing frustration: Stephanie is angry at a professor; Jennifer is mad at her boyfriend; and Jessica is fed up with her father. Each of these characters feels her situation is “the worst one ever,” and tension builds to a sudden and hilarious climax.

‘Acadia Birding Festival’ presented

MARQUETTE – The Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society will present “The Acadia Birding Festival, Mt. Desert Island, Maine,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room of Peter White Library, Marquette.

Clyde and Debbie Hecox will share pictures and stories from their June 2013 visit to the “Acadia Birding Festival.”

Roger Tory Peterson called Mt. Desert Island the “warbler capital of the world,” but it is also home to boreal species such as the Black-backed woodpecker and Boreal Chickadee, as well as significant marsh and water birds such as the American Woodcock, Wilson’s Snipe, American Bittern, and Sora. Finally, boating and kayak trips provide views of Puffins, Razorbills, and other pelagic birds.

‘The Great Gatsby’ performance set

CALUMET – The Calumet High School Drama Club will perform an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Calumet Theatre, Calumet.

Celebration of entrepreneurship set

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s College of Business will host the inaugural Celebration of Entrepreneurship and Business from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the University Center, Marquette.

The event is for business professionals, community members and high school/college students.

There will be 21 presentations by college and community professionals covering such topics as risk management for the entrepreneur, Internet marketing, social entrepreneurship and protecting intellectual property and trade secrets.

‘Tobacco Wars’ presented at NMU

MARQUETTE – Patrick Reynolds, anti-smoking crusader and grandson of tobacco company founder RJ Reynolds, will present “Tobacco Wars: The Battle for a Smoke-Free Society” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center of Northern Michigan University, Marquette.

After his own father died from smoking, Reynolds became an outspoken opponent of the cigarette industry. He serves as executive director of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free America, a nonprofit group he founded in 1989.

Its mission is to motivate youth to stay tobacco free and empower all smokers to quit successfully.

It is free to NMU students with ID and $2 for the general public.
