Millage requests OK’d by electorate

MUNISING — The results of the Alger County millages from Tuesday’s election are as follows:

≤ 911 Millage Proposal to Repeal and Replace

Existing Millage

Alger County residents approved by a vote of 1,129 to 361 a millage to allow the county to fund all 911 emergency telephone dispatch system operations by authorizing a new increased millage of 1.00 mill by repealing and replacing the previously approved millage of 0.50 mill. Repealing and replacing the previous millage will limit the amount of taxes which may be imposed on taxable property, and be increased by 1.00 mill from 2021-26. It is estimated that the 1.00 mill would raise about $404,400 when first levied in 2021.

≤ Senior Services

Millage Renewal and Restoration Proposal:

Alger County residents approved by a vote of 1,206 to 281 to authorize Alger County to levy 0.50 mill for funding activities purposes for people ages 60 and older. 0.4993 of the 0.50 mill represents the 0.50 mill renewal approved by electors in 2016. These purposes will limit the amount of taxes which may be imposed on taxable property, and will be increased by 0.50 mill from 2022-26. It is estimated that 0.50 mill would raise about $202,200 when first levied in 2022.

≤ MSU Extension Millage Renewal and Restoration Proposal:

Alger County residents approved by a vote of 1,091 to 392 to authorize Alger County to levy 0.25 mill for funding Michigan State University Extension services. 0.2496 of the 0.25 mill represents a renewal of the 0.25 mill renewal approved by electors in 2016. These purposes will limit the amount of taxes which may be imposed on taxable property, be increased by 0.25 mill from 2022-26. It is estimated that 0.25 mill would raise about $101,100 when first levied in 2022.

≤ Alger Transit Authority (ALTRAN) Millage Renewal Proposal:

Alger County residents approved by a vote of 1,133 to 339 continue to levy a tax at the same rate previously approved by voters of up to 0.75 mill of real and personal property from 2022-26 for the continued service for ALTRAN with a purpose of operating public transportation. It is estimated to generate approximately $304,000 in 2022.

Township Proposals:

Mathias Township

≤ Proposal for the Purpose of Crushing of Gravel and other Road Maintenance within Mathias Township:

Mathias Township residents approved by a vote of 57 to 10 imposing an increase of up to one mill under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Mathias Township. It will be be levied from 2021-23, and will be for the purpose of crushing gravel and other road maintenance within Mathias Township raising about $20,230 in the first year the millage is levied.

≤ Proposal for Purchase of New Fire Trucks or Equipment:

Mathias Township residents approved by a vote of 55 to 12 imposing an increase of up to one mill under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Mathias Township. It will be levied from 2021-27, for purchase of new fire trucks or equipment, raising about $20,230 in the first year the millage is levied.

≤ Proposal for the Purpose of Providing Fire Operating and Fire Protection Services:

Mathias Township residents approved by a vote of 57 to 10 imposing an increase of up to one mill under Article IX, Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Mathias Township. It will be levied from 2021-23, and will be for the purpose of providing fire operating and fire protection services, and will raise about $20,230 in the first year the millage is levied.

Munising Township

≤ Proposal to Renew An Increase Tax Limitation by 1.5 Mills for the Purpose of Purchasing and Maintaining Fire Equipment, for the Fire Department within the Township of Munising:

Munising Township residents approved by a vote of 297 to 64 an increase of 1.5 mills of the total amount of taxes against all taxable property for all purposes in Munising Township from 2021-25 under Section 6, Article 9 of the Michigan Constitution. This will give the Munising Township Board the power to levy a special tax in each of the said years at its discretion for the funds to be used for the purpose of purchasing and maintaining fire equipment.
