MARQUETTE — A group of local artists have collaborated to create a one-of-a-kind calendar that will benefit The Marquette Women’s Center.

The 2020 Queen City Calendar features the work of 13 area artists, one for each month and a cover artist. This year’s work, created through various mediums, was done by Lindsey Naylor, Michael Wilson, Lauren Merkel, Johanna Andronis, Jacy Madden, Nick Erickson, Christopher Moore, Shawn Huffman, Ashley Erickson, Jess Niemi, Molly Clifford, Gretchen Mckenzie and Bryce Devore.

Artists keep quiet about their vision during the design phase so each page is completely unique, explained calendar organizer Nick Erickson. One month may be a drawing, a work of digital art, etc.

“There’s really not thematic connection from page to page because everyone’s doing something totally different which is part of what makes it cool,” he said.

While Erickson has participated as an artist for previous Queen City Calendars, this is the first year he has organized the calendar, which was first printed in 2014. Though the calendar hasn’t been made in consecutive years since, he hopes to continue the project each year.

Calendars can be purchased at a cost of $50. All proceeds will be donated to the Marquette Women’s Center’s holiday programs.

“I wanted the money to go to out to people in need during the holidays and the Women’s Center has a lot of programs that facilitate that. That’s why I decided to go with them,” Erickson said. “You can see the work they do in the community, so I like to help them out as much as possible.”

A release show was held at Ore Dock Brewing Company Sunday for the community to enjoy live music by Blanco Suave, Ladoga and Mirador and to pick up their calendar.

Calendars are available now for purchase at repeaterpress.com and will also be available at Donckers.

Erickson encouraged everyone to purchase a calendar for themselves or as a gift,as a way to enjoy local artwork and give back to those in need.

“It’s a unique gift to give someone for the holidays,” he said. It really is a great value. You’re getting 13 pieces of screen printed artwork and it’s all been done within the community and it’s supporting a good cause. For people who have had [the calendar] in the past it’s one for their collection because we hope to continue the project each year.”

The full calendar can be seen on repeaterpress.com.
