UPHS welcomes back Dr. Gowda

ESCANABA – UP Health System is announcing the addition of Santosh Gowda, MD, to UPHS’ hematology and oncology team.

Gowda is returning to Escanaba after having previously worked in the area from 2009-14 as a Medical Oncology/Hematology Physician.

“After having worked at several hospitals in the US and India, I find the UP Health System to be the ideal workplace for their commitment to patient care,” Gowda said in an announcement, “and serving the community with constant effort to bring in bigger and better resources in the best interest of patients and the community.

“The serenity of the U.P. and being an ideal community to raise a family in was what prompted me to choose the U.P. in 2009 and now again in 2019.”

Gowda is married and has two kids. In his spare time, he enjoys biking, yoga, tennis and quiet time in nature.

Gowda has four American Board certifications in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Hematology, Palliative Care and Hospice.

He went to medical school at Bangalore Medical College and completed his residency at the University of Florida before doing his fellowship at Froedtert Hospital Medical College of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Gowda is also a recipient of the Press Ganey Award, given for the best patient care in hematology/oncology in the US.

“The use of evidence-based medicine with a holistic approach towards patient and family-centered care is pivotal in delivering quality cancer care,” he said.

In between his two tenures with UPHS, Gowda spent time in India as the head of Medical Oncology and head of Integrative Oncology at the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center and served as an additional director and senior consultant for the Department of Medical Oncology at Fortis Healthcare Bangalore.

“Raising awareness about prevention, early diagnosis, cancer care and survivorship among the community members is my goal to beat cancer,” Gowda said in the announcement. “Also, being able to offer expertise and assist people when making tough decisions when confronted with cancer.”

Gowda returns to his former practice located at UP Health System – Doctors Park, 710 S. Lincoln Rd. Suite 400, Escanaba Michigan. For more information call 906-233-9363.
