UPHS-M welcomes Schwake

MARQUETTE — UP Health System-Marquette recently welcomed Dr. Jonathon Schwake to its digestive and liver team.

Schwake attended medical school at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine before completing his residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He finished his fellowship at the Gastroenterology and Hematology Brooke Army Medical Center. He recently served as a staff gastroenterologist at Minnesota Gastroenterology.

After growing up in a rural community in Iowa, the Schwake relished the chance to serve a small-town community.

“I’ve always hoped to have the opportunity to practice in a location like the Upper Peninsula,” he said. “I know from my own family’s experience the challenge of finding specialty care in smaller communities, and I’m glad to be able to offer gastroenterology care to the community without traveling hundreds of miles.

“And it goes without saying, the U.P. is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and will now be able to call home.”

For Dr. Schwake, one of his primary medical care philosophies involves listening to the patient.

“I think that medicine is a mystifying, confusing and often stressful area of life for most people,” he said. “Unfortunately, many people avoid medical care for those reasons, particularly smaller communities like the one I grew up in. I hope that I make my patient feel at ease, that I can grasp their concerns and present care solutions in a way that make them feel validated and empowered to participate in their care.”
