UP Health System: Recruiting the best

MARQUETTE – UP Health System is in the midst of constructing a gorgeous new state-of-the-art hospital and medical campus in Marquette. But it’s also busy recruiting the best and the brightest physicians and other top-notch staff to join the amazing team that currently serves patients in the community.

“So far this year, 41 patient care providers joined our medical staff – this is inclusive of physicians, advanced practice providers and CRNAs for both UP Health System – Marquette and Bell. This is certainly an increase over the last few years,” said Theresa Stewart, Physician Services at UPHS – Marquette. “Primary Care, i.e. Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry are high priority goals going forward. All three specialties reflect a far higher demand than supply making them difficult recruits.”

But UPHS is using all the tools in its toolbox and provides exemplary customer service to set it apart from “the pack” in order to continue to build on its strong primary care base, Stewart said.

The new hospital and medical campus will consist of more than 800,000 square feet, including a 243 bed hospital, diagnostic and therapeutic service center, patient care services, adjoining medical office building and parking structure.

The new recruits bring outstanding skills to better serve patients… and some interesting histories that make each a unique individual who will bring something special to the area. Such as:

– Dr. Viktoria Koskenoja, Emergency Medicine, was on the Northern Michigan University Cross Country Ski Team. Skiing is what brought her back to this area to practice. She likes the Upper Peninsula so much, her brother-in-law Joe Holcomb caught the “U.P. Fever” and joined UPHS as a new CRNA this fall.

– Emily Twichell, PA, Neurosurgery, a Marquette native, returned to the area after more than ten years away. Her mother was an RN/Risk Manager who retired from the hospital in 2008 after almost 30 years of service. She was so thankful UPHS brought her daughter home that she came and hugged Theresa Stewart in the office!

– Dr. Josh Dykla, Pediatrics, is an avid downhill skier. He chose us because no matter where he lives in Marquette, he will always be only minutes away from Marquette Mountain. He plans to ski every day! The UP Health System – Marquette Pediatrics team sees patients in Marquette at the Peninsula Medical Center, in Ishpeming at UP Health System – Bell and in Escanaba at UP Health System – Doctors Park.

– Lisa Leedham, PA at UPHS – Bell, drove two hours to get to the Salt Lake City International Airport in Utah for her five-hour flight into the UP for her July site visit. She subsequently fell in love with the UPHS – Bell team and facility. She is now the new Walk-In Clinic PA in Ishpeming.

– UP Health System welcomed many more outstanding providers in 2016: Dr. Michael Mellana, Cardiac Electrophysiology; Dr. Yazan Khouri, Interventional Cardiology; Dr. James R. Baer, Radiation Oncology; Dr. David Gast, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; Dr. Thomas Schmidt, Neurology; Dr. Laura Santoro, Family Medicine; Dr. Nathan Loewen, Podiatry; Drs. Amadeo Sturla, Sean Hendren, David Viau, Jamie Johnson, Emergency Medicine; Dr. Cristina Chan, Internal Medicine and many more!
