Joe’s Gym: Focusing on fitness
In 1982 when Joe Little first opened Joe’s Gym, he wanted to establish the premier weight training facility in the Marquette area, a goal he achieved shortly after opening. Joe’s Gym became the place to go to train with weights. Joe has seen a lot of change in the area of personal fitness over the years, but has kept the look, feel, and focus of his gym since he opened it 34 years ago. He and his wife Barb, are very proud of having been an integral part of the area’s personal fitness community for over three decades and for never having been closed over all those years.
Thousands of people have enjoyed what Joe’s Gym has had to offer and while Joe’s has been home to several nationally ranked weight lifters over the years, the gym provides a comfortable atmosphere for weight lifters of all levels, from the person just starting out – regardless of their age – to the experienced, serious lifter.
As you might expect, Joe’s has tons of free weights and an abundance of weight lifting machines, the most equipment for its size of other gyms in northern Michigan. Joe hasn’t forgotten the aerobic component of fitness and has several ellipticals and treadmills and a recumbent bike.
The atmosphere at Joe’s is really low key and friendly. Being a member is more than simply having access to the gym and the equipment, it’s like working out with friends at your own personal gym. And while very reasonably priced personal training is available, friendly advice and assistance are alive and well at Joe’s Gym. Barb said, “The one-on-one training we offer at Joe’s should appeal to those ready to really get in shape. If you want the focus to be on you and not on a crowd, then Joe’s Gym is the place for you.” The trainers focus on one person at a time and that’s a big deal.
Joe’s Gym is located at 148 West Spring Street, on the corner of South Third and Spring. (It’s the bright yellow building next to the Marq Tran bus transfer station.) The gym has convenient hours: Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 9p.m. and weekends noon to 5 p.m. Hours are reduced for the holidays. There is a 24-hour access option, at an extra charge, for those who can’t train during regularly scheduled hours.
Joe’s rate schedule is: Daily – $7, 10- Day Punch Card – $50, One Month – $35, Two Months – $65, Three Months – $85, Four Months – $95, Six Months – $145, and One Year – $250. There are also gift certificates, corporate rates, and special rates at different times of the year.
