Disc golf basics

MARQUETTE — The name “disc golf” is pretty explanatory, but in case you want more details, the Professional Disc Golf Association has a guide to disc golf on its website at pdga.com.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc. The sport is like regular “ball golf” in that the object is to complete each hole in the fewest strokes, or in disc golf parlance, throws.

A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, or hole, which can be one of a number of disc golf targets, the most common being an elevated metal basket.

As players progress down the fairway, they must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw landed. The hole is completed when the “putt” lands in the basket.

As with regular golf, trees, shrubs and changing terrain in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles.

The PDGA also has a Disc Golfer’s Code: Play smart, respect the course and represent the sport. This involves not throwing in a blind area, not littering and teaching others the sport.
