To the Journal editor: Fifty years ago, I addressed a meeting of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. At that time, I felt their grants were unfair and unjust competition. The recent grants by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and rural Development illustrate this has not changed. How many people experiencing food insecurity will be helped by $33,000 to irrigate Christmas trees? To the Journal editor: Parks and Recreation Millage Shall the total tax rate limitation, on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Powell Township, Marquette County, Michigan, for the purpose of providing recreational services to the residents of Powell Township, be levied for the period of five years, from 2025 to 2029, both inclusive, per Article 9, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution at the rate of 1 mils on each $1,000 of taxable value. To the Journal editor: You can tell there is an election coming soon. Brochures in the mail, advertising on the media and one other called yard signs. The original purpose of a yard sign was to show support for a candidate by displaying a sign on your property. Now, some candidates put yard signs at intersections and along roadways. Is this because they do not have supporters willing to back the candidate in public? Maybe the name of the yard signs should be changed to intersection signs? To The Journal editor: On May 11, the NALC Branch #95 hosted a food drive throughout the Marquette area. On behalf of the Marquette Post Office and branch #95, we would like to thank the residents of Marquette for their generous donations of non-perishable goods. We collected a total of 7,700 pounds. Those donations supported the pantries for the following Marquette organizations: Janzen House, Room at the Inn Warming Center, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and the Women’s Center/Harbor House. To The Journal editor: With a lot of news about climate change, which is now happening, more hot weather, hurricanes and more severe storms. Think about where you live. The southern states are noticing a big change. Temperature in the 100s and lasting longer, plus many more tornadoes. In the most northern state as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is not the severe weather yet plus we have the different seasons. Think of it: not the same thing every day. Grappling with Biden debate performance

To the Journal editor: Disappointment and despair. These were my feelings when the June 27 presidential debate turned to the question of whether we are facing an existential climate crisis. For me, as a Catholic, I agree with Pope Francis that the world is facing extreme weather change and a climate crisis that threatens “humanity’s existence.” Francis writes that ignoring climate change will only heighten the crisis.
