Lately I have been reflecting on the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” This proverb emphasizes our need for being patient when things are happening around us. The reason this has been resonating is reading the comments on Facebook about the new skate park that is coming to downtown Ishpeming. Why is Medicaid critical to the U.P.’s safety net?

This is a call to action. If we don’t act soon, Medicaid funding for Michigan citizens is about to be gutted by the majority party in Congress in just a few weeks. In our First Congressional District (CD), 171,600 people, many of whom are our neighbors, depend on life-saving medical care that Medicaid covers. We need to convince U.S. Rep. Save Our Democracy from the Consequences of the SAVE Act

The SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voters Eligibility Act) creates barriers to register to vote. It will greatly impact women, low-income voters and new voters. The SAVE act is not based on facts. There is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting affecting elections. There is already a law prohibiting non-citizens from voting. This act requires voters to submit documentary proof of citizenship in person when registering to vote. Justice for Ukraine

Responding to Jack Bergman’s letter to me of  April 25, about this administration’s position on Ukraine. The centerpiece, is the withdrawal of U.S. military support, and an appeasement “peace” plan that includes ceding 20% of Ukraine to Russia. In 1938, British Prime Minister Chamberlain agreed to give part of Czechoslovakia to Germany in an attempt to avoid a larger war. Fighting the good fight

It is good to see so many concerned citizens submitting Letters to the Editor that question what is happening in our government every day. The only reason for hope for the survival of country is seeing American citizens stand up for the poor, women, children, Head Start, federal employees, our national parks, our public lands, the environment, Medicaid, Medicare, immigrants, people of color, veterans, teachers, the elderly, the disabled, free journalism and on and on. Who knows who or what Trump will target next? I'm guessing that all of us who speak out are on a "list." So be it. ...

With our two late winter storms, don't let that get to you. (Soon, the snow) will melt ... and into spring we go. A few years ago, I looked at what I wrote about this time of year. It's about our Upper Peninsula of Michigan — beauty in each season, many sights to see.
