Lane closures for UP bridge inspections June 5-11

HOUGHTON — Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation will be performing routine bridge inspections on structures in the Upper Peninsula from June 5-11. The inspections will require intermittent closures. The following closures are scheduled for the inspections. The work is weather-dependent: • Friday, June 5: The M-26 bridge over the Eagle River had lane closures under flag control.

 • Today: The M-64/M-38 bridge over the Ontonagon River and River Road will have shared-use path closures from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and shoulder closures from 2-4 p.m.

M-28 shoulder work in Chippewa County starts June 8

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing about $2.9 million for shoulder widening on M-28 from M-221 to I-75 in Chippewa County, extending the lifespan of the roadway and increasing safety for motorists. The project also includes resurfacing the carpool lot at the I-75 interchange. The tentative start date is 
Monday, June 8 with the estimated ending date of 
Friday, Aug. 21.

Marquette County Road 456 closed

SKANDIA — The Marquette County Road Commission has closed Marquette County Road 456 in Skandia Township, approximately one-quarter of a mile west of US 41 until further notice. The closure is due to a culvert failure.

Family rescued on Keweenaw Bay

L'ANSE — A family of five from L’Anse was returned safely to shore Tuesday night after their 31-foot sailboat became stuck on rocks in Keweenaw Bay. According to a press release from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the family was sailing on Lake Superior from the Portage Canal to the L’Anse Marina – about a 15-mile trip across Keweenaw Bay.
