Marquette trio wins Sr. scramble

MARQUETTE – A pair of Marquette trios duked it out on extra holes to decide an Upper Peninsula Golf Association senior three-man scramble golf tournament held at the Marquette Golf Club on Wednesday.

Playing at the club’s Greywalls course, the two local squads each shot 13-under-par scores of 58 to force a playoff. The team of Mike L’Huillier, Jim Acocks and Marvin Meyers then beat out the trio of John Howko, Bob Berg and Dan Derosia for the championship.

The Iron River threesome of Gary Richards, Dennis Heikkila and Dennis Peirolero finished third with 60; while David Verely, Randy Dixon and Fred Flink of Norway were fourth with 61; and Jim Scullion, Rich Koskey and Scott Erickson from the Marquette area were fifth with 61.

The Ishpeming trio of Clyde Nyman, Jerry Pirkola and Steve Sundblad shot 65 to win the first flight, while the Gwinn threesome of Ed Flath, Buryl Smith and Jim Picotte carded 69 to take the second flight.
