CRYSTAL FALLS -- As fall colors begin to brighten the Upper Peninsula and temperatures turn cooler, Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is preparing for its annual Fall Fest and Quilt Auction on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The event, which begins at 9:30 a.m. CDT, will feature food, handmade crafts and approximately 80 colorful quilts, continuing a longtime autumn tradition while raising funds to support the camp's outdoor ministry.
A continental breakfast will be served in the camp dining hall from 9:30-10:30 a.m., followed by a bake sale featuring homemade breads.
Visitors can then browse quilts displayed in the camp auditorium. The handmade quilts range in size from small throws to king-size quilts.
A corner store will offer a selection of smaller handcrafted items, including tied comforters. Several unique handmade pieces also will be available through a raffle.
The live quilt auction begins at 11 a.m., with Pastor Soren Schmidt of Chassell serving as auctioneer. Thirty juried quilts will be offered during the in-person auction.
For those unable to attend, the remaining 50 quilts will be available through a virtual auction. Online bidding begins Sept. 23 and closes at 5 p.m. CDT Oct. 3.
Those interested in participating in the virtual auction can register at fortunelake.org and follow the instructions for bidding and payment.
The annual fundraiser is organized by a group of women known as the "Sisters of the Cloth." Throughout the year, the quilters gather at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp to work on group projects, while also taking individual projects home to complete.
