Lynda Sue Downard

GWINN, MI – Lynda Sue Downard, 69, of Gwinn, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at U.P. Health System-Marquette. Oh, how surprised she must have been to awaken at His side rather than in the recovery room!

Lynda was born on January 4, 1957, in Adams County, Colorado, to William and Julia (Truitt) Downard. She was a 1974 graduate of Gwinn High School and went on to attend Northern Michigan University, where she earned two degrees.

Lynda dedicated many years to serving her community as a paraprofessional with Gwinn Public Schools, where she worked with elementary students. She also devoted her time as a Girl Scout leader, positively impacting the lives of many young people through her guidance and encouragement.

A lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Gwinn, Lynda was deeply involved in her church family. She sang in the church choir and faithfully volunteered in the church kitchen and nursery. Helping others came naturally to Lynda, and she was always willing to lend a hand wherever she was needed.

Lynda was a very talented artist who enjoyed expressing her creativity through drawing and painting as well as digital and mixed media. She also created breathtaking jewelry. Lynda was an avid reader and found great joy in books throughout her life.

Lynda is survived by her father, William Downard of Gwinn; her sister, Joy Layer of Holland, Michigan; her brother, Robert (Kelly) Downard of De Pere, Wisconsin; her nephew, Christopher (Ashley) Downard of Freedom, Wisconsin; her niece, Amanda Downard; her great-nephews, Stefan Downard and Isaac Downard, both of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Ezekiel Downard of Freedom, Wisconsin; as well as many other cherished family members and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Downard.
