TRENARY — This past Saturday, people from all over the country flocked to Trenary to witness a truly U.P. tradition. Now in its “turdy-turd” iteration, the Trenary Outhouse Classic has become an area-wide sensation, even inspiring copy-cat events like the Porta-Potty Races in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and the Toilet Bowl Trauma Trot in Niagara, Wisconsin.

This year’s event was bigger than ever, drawing so many people that the event ran out of commemorative buttons. In addition to the race itself there were several other contests, including Most Outrageous Outhouse, won by U.S.S. Shit Happens, raced by Mutti Timonen and Wyatt Fink; Most Patriotic Outhouse, won by The Daily Constitution, raced by Scott Hodge and Andy Kuschner; Most Patriotic Patron, won by Mary Ann Bernier in her Lady Liberty costume; and Best Fur Hat, won by Sue Roberts.

As for the outhouses themselves, the race is split up by age category. The winners are as follows:

Dingleberries (ages 13-17) — The Sunday Morning Rest Stop, raced by Colton Hughes and Jimbo Santos of Gladstone with a time of 36.97 seconds

Stinkers (ages 18-35) — Carlotta’s Sauna, raced by James Maki of Chatham and Geoge Gogol of Grass Lake with a time of 26.78 seconds

Suzanne Dent and Ann Noel of Wyoming, Michigan dubbed themselves The Drunken Trolls and clinched 4th place in the “Old Farts” category with a time of 49 seconds. (Journal photo by Annie Lippert)

Da Sharts (ages 36-49) — Cougar Run, raced by Lynn Eugate and Justin Eugate of Escanaba with a time of 26 seconds

Old Farts (ages 50+) — Liberty and Just-Piss for all, raced by Andy Trenary of Bloomington, Minnesota and Darrin Beek of Northampton, Massachusetts with a time of 25.84 seconds
