MARQUETTE – Thousands of Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals throughout the Midwest are receiving bed-side phones courtesy of the American Pioneers, one of the world’s largest community organizations of corporate volunteers. The U.P. hospitals who are recipients of this generous donation are the Iron Mountain Medical Center and the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Since 1993, the national Pioneer project, in cooperation with Communications Workers of America (CWA), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and many veteran groups have installed thousands of miles of wiring in VA hospital rooms. Most VA hospitals were built without the lines, which is an inconvenience if patients wish to call their families.

MARQUETTE – The new steam electric generating plant site at the foot of Hampton St. on Marquette Bay has a special smokestack, so special that it has gained the status of a landmark. The landmark, built by Continental Heine Co., Chicago, stands at 250 feet tall and made of 33 concrete sections. There is still work to be done on the smokestack including an installation of a metal cap and obstruction lights on top, the completion of an interior firebrick lining that starts 100 feet from the ground and finishes at the top. Depending on the weather, the job is expected to be completed in 30 days.

Starting at $3.23/week.
