Menominee County Commissioner Johnson announces run for state representative
Larry Johnson
SPALDING — Menominee County Commissioner Larry Johnson has announced today that he will run for State Representative in Michigan’s 108th House District, pledging to bring a strong Upper Peninsula work ethic, fiscal responsibility, and common-sense leadership to Lansing, according to a campaign press release.
The 108th District includes Delta, Menominee, Schoolcraft, Luce, Chippewa and part of Mackinac counties.
“I’m not a career politician. I come from a blue-collar background and have built a career working across a variety of trades,” Johnson, a Republican, said in prepared remarks. “That hands-on experience has given me a practical understanding of the challenges our communities face and taught me to tackle problems head-on. My goal is simple: to build on the progress our current U.P. legislators have made and continue making this region an even better place for the next generation.”
Born and raised in Wilson, Johnson, 42, now lives with his wife of 18 years and their three daughters in Spalding. A lifelong resident of the area, he has served as a Menominee County commissioner since 2019, running unopposed in each election. As Finance Chair of the Commission, he has fulfilled his commitment to deliver balanced budgets that consistently end in the black. He also serves as Chair of the Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties Board, guiding the department through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Johnson said his campaign will focus on the issues that matter most to families and communities across the Upper Peninsula. He is committed to improving mental health care by advocating for an inpatient treatment facility in the U.P. and building partnerships with neighboring states to expand access to care. He believes in strong government oversight to reduce waste and increase accountability at every level. On economic development, Johnson will work to promote job growth and local prosperity by supporting entrepreneurs and helping businesses expand. Finally, he said he supports regulatory reform to streamline government processes, improve efficiency and strengthen Michigan’s economy.
