Sault Ste. Marie man arrested for felony methamphetamine possession, faces multiple charges

SAULT STE MARIE — A Sault Ste. Marie man has been arraigned on felony charges of Possession of Methamphetamine and a misdemeanor traffic charge following his arrest on June 14.

On June 14, at approximately 4:03 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police post in Sault Ste. Marie Post observed a vehicle with defective equipment. The vehicle was traveling on Johnston Street near Easterday Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie. At that time, troopers initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver.

The troopers’ following investigation resulted in 41-year-old Derek Gehrke being arrested for possession of methamphetamine, operating a vehicle with no insurance and a separate warrant for his arrest.

Gehrke was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail for the charges.

On June 16, Gehrke was arraigned in the 91st District Court in Sault Ste. Marie on one count of possession of methamphetamine and one count of operating a vehicle with no insurance. His bond was set at $5,000 with conditions.

He is next due in district court on June 30.
