Manistique also qualified athletes for the U.P. Finals scheduled for Kingsford on Saturday, May 31.
The top four finishers in both individual and relay events continue on to the finals, with the same true in Division 2. In Division 3, the only difference is that only two relays qualify out of each regional, as there are twice as many regionals with a total of about three times as many teams in the smallest-schools division.
Here are more details about this regional:

The Sentinels won 13 of the 17 events in the boys meet, and not surprisingly, had a whole lot more qualifiers, too, out of the second- through fourth-place positions.
Marquette scored 102 points, which was more than the other five teams combined. Sault Ste. Marie was a distant second with 37, Gladstone had 19.5, Menominee 14, Escanaba 8.5 and Manistique was sixth with 6.
Not counting relays, all four of which they swept to first-place finishes, a pair of Sentinels won two events apiece.
Jacob MacPhee took the 200-meter dash in 22.53 seconds and the 400 in 51.17, while Lucas Ballard added the next two longest races, the 800 in 1:59.87 and the 1,600 in 4:36.82.
Marquette teammate Michael Cattoor won the pole vault after clearing 14 feet, 6 inches, Kyler Sager the long jump with a leap of 19-11.75, Ford Richardson the 300 hurdles in 41.79 seconds, James Barch the 3,200 in 9:33.88 and Jacob Norman the 110 hurdles in 15.82.
Cattoor added a finals qualification in the high jump, Sager in the 100, Richardson in the 200 and Barch in the 1,600.
Other Marquette qualifiers were Pierce Pittsley in the 100 and 200, Drew Bradley in the 100 and pole vault, Evan Balko in the 800 and 1,600, Braylon Zdunek in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Talon Smith in the shot put and discus, Beepsee Teeple in the 800, Rorik Holmquist and Seppi Camilli both in the 3,200, and David Williams in the long jump.
Manistique had two athletes qualify for Kingsford in three individual events, with Sam Moose in the shot put and discus, and Beltran Guillermo in the discus.
The Emeralds’ third-place team in the 3,200 relay also qualified, which on this day included Kavin Jackson, Adam Brandt, Eli Hills and Gabe Litzner.
Relays, whose members traditionally can be changed at the finals, were a Sentinels’ strength.
The 400 relay won in 45.14 with Jaxon Jurmu, Bradley, Oliver Kudej and Sager; the 800 clocked 1:33.23 with Richardson, MacPhee, Ben Rayhorn and James Goodwin; the 1,600 that came in at 3:30.41 was composed of Richardson, Balko, Ballard and MacPhee; and the 3,200 clocking 9:04.04 was run by Jack Grant, Llewellyn Fillmore, Balko and Peter Argeropoulos.
Maki-Warne doubles up
Marquette didn’t win nearly as many events in the girls meet — just five — but probably placed at least as many qualifiers into the finals, the main objective of the meet.
The Sentinels finished with 57 points as Gladstone hung close as runner-up with 47.5. Sault Ste. Marie came in third with 30.5, while Manistique and Escanaba tied for fourth with 21 and Menominee totaled 10.
Marquette’s Maija Maki-Warne was the lone area girl to double up her individual wins, taking the 800 in 2:27.69 and 1,600 in 5:25.82.
Teammate Ella Fure won the 3,200 in 11:57.24, Taylen Todd the long jump with a leap of 15-8 and Chloe Jackson the 300 hurdles in 49.89 seconds.
Manistique’s lone winner was Gwen Brewster in the discus with a toss of 84-3.
Maki-Warne also qualified with a top-four finish in the 3,200, while Fure did the same in the 800 and 1,600, Todd in the 100 and Jackson in the hurdles.
Also for the Sentinels, finals qualifiers included Chloe Miller in the 400 and 800, Grace Filizetti in the 100, Adeleigh Riutta in the 400, Evelyn Grant in the 3,200 and both Brynn Autio and Jazmine Junak in the discus.
From Manistique, Brewster also will be in the finals in the shot put, while the Emeralds’ Leah Goodreau qualified in the 100 and 200, Ryleigh Rice in the discus and Kyra Carlson in the pole vault.
Marquette qualified for the finals in all four relays, including a victory in the 1,600 in 4:18.06 with Kiera Daughtery, Maki-Warne, Miller and Riutta.
Manistique will be a finalist in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays, with Goodreau running with two of them in the regionals, the same as the Emeralds’ Aaliyah Sears, Maya Carlson and Kyra Carlson.
