Negaunee girls win, boys runners-up in track

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee girls were winners and Miners boys runners-up at a four-team high school track and field invitational meet held at the Negaunee High School track on Wednesday.

The Miners scored 103 points in the girls meet to almost outpoint the other three teams together. Houghton was runner-up with 58, Calumet third with 48 and Westwood fourth with four points.

The boys meet was quite a bit closer with Houghton coming out on top with 70 as Negaunee was runner-up with 51. Westwood came in third with 38 while Calumet had 21.

For the girls, Negaunee won eight of the 14 events contested, with no competition held in the pole vault, 3,200-meter run and 1,600 relay.

Keira Waterman and Sadie Rogers each had a hand in four wins, as both were joined by Macyn Dellangelo and Izzy Francisco in winning the 400 and 800 relays. The 400 relay clocked 53.00 seconds and the 800 relay came in at 1:54.40.

Waterman also took the 200 dash by more than two seconds in 27.77 seconds and the 400 also by more than two seconds in 1:03.89.

Rogers was victorious in the 100 hurdles by four-tenths of a second in 16.25 seconds, then added a win in the 300 hurdles by exactly a second and a half in 50.84 seconds.

Dellangelo also was triumphant in the 100 by 0.27 seconds in 12.76 seconds, while teammate Nori Korsman added a victory in the long jump by more than a foot with a leap of 15 feet, 9 inches.

Negaunee won three events of the 13 contested in the boys meet, with no 200 dash, 3,200 run, 1,600 relay nor high jump.

The Miners’ Brady Mager took the 110 hurdles by almost two full seconds in 15.14 seconds, then added a victory in the 300 hurdles by 1.78 seconds in 41.10.

Negaunee also got a win from Derek McEachern in the 400 dash by just shy of four full seconds in 54.02 seconds.

Westwood also won three events in the boys meet, with Louis Salmi having a hand in all three of them. He took the pole vault by two full feet after clearing 11-0, then added a four-inch win in the long jump with a leap of 18-5.

He joined teammates Trenton Wash, Ellis King and Karter Scherer as the Patriots also won the 800 relay by not quite a full second in 1:39.34.
