Congresswoman Haley Stevens joins senate race in Michigan

WASHINGTON, D.C — Haley Stevens, a Democrat who currently represents Michigan’s 11th congressional district in the House of Representatives, has announced she will be running for Senate to fill the vacancy left by Senator Gary Peters, who is retiring after his current term. She is the latest of several candidates who have announced bids for the seat.
“I have spent my life fighting for the people of Michigan and right now, the people I love are concerned about rising costs at the grocery store, uncertainty in our auto industry because of shoot-from-hip tariffs, and the ongoing attacks on our democracy and our personal freedoms,” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens. “Donald Trump and his billionaire buddy Elon Musk don’t know the first thing about Michigan workers – we built the middle class and we share the value of hard work. That’s why I’m running for Senate, because I believe Michiganders need someone in their corner fighting for them and that’s what I’ve done my entire life.”
Stevens has been serving Michigan’s 11th district since 2019, and worked as the chief of staff for the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry for President Barack Obama starting in 2009.
“In a world where far too many politicians show up only when it’s convenient, Haley shows up because she cares,” said Mayor of Lathrup Village Kelly Garrett. Lathrup Villiage is located in Oakland County, and is within the 11th district. “Haley’s fought for working families, for women’s rights, for veterans, for affordable healthcare, and she’s been a fierce champion for American manufacturing.”
Running against Stevens in the Senate primary race are Democratic candidates Mallory McMorrow and Abdul El-Sayed. McMorrow has been a state senator since 2019 representing the 8th district, while El-Sayed served as director the Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services in Wayne County, and was endorsed by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in a 2018 run for governor. Sanders has also endorsed El-Sayed’s senate run.
“We need candidates who will stand up to Trump’s authoritarianism and protect our democratic way of life,” said Sanders. “It is my strong view that Abdul El-Sayed is the kind of leader who will do just that.”
Whichever candidate wins the primary will likely face Mike Rogers in the 2026 general election. Rogers served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2015 representing Michigan’s 8th district, and narrowly lost the 2024 Senate election in Michigan to U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin.
“I’ll stand with President Trump and we will deliver on the mandate given to him by the American people,” said Rogers in his campaign announcement video. Rogers has received an endorsement from Senate Majority Leader Jone Thune of South Dakota.
Michigan’s 2026 primary election date has yet to be announced, but the general election will be held Nov. 3, 2026
