Des Fernandez, Christine Jarvi keep Eagles atop Class B in Iron Range Women

ISHPEMING -- Des Fernandez and Christine Jarvi capped off big hitting days with home runs as the Eagles opened up a two-game lead in Class B with a 19-7 victory over the Elks Lodge on Wednesday in the Iron Range Women's Softball League.

Fernandez went 2 for 3 as she hit two homers, one a grand slam, while Jarvi went 3 for 4 with her homer. Caylie Gray paced the Elks, going 3 for 4, as she and Becky Lee each hit a triple.

In another "B" game, Gabby Hebert went 4 for 4, all four being doubles, and added in two RBIs as Martin Sports eased past Willey's Tire Shop 13-9.

The winners' Kayla Reeve also went 4 for 4, while Willey's Krystal Heikkinen added in yet another 4-for-4 night with a double and three RBIs as teammate Lindsay Williams was 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs.

Chelsea Roberts led a lusty extra-base attack with a homer as Pineshears slipped by Paradise Bar 18-15.

Pineshears' Chelsey Wunder hit a triple, while Victoria Dishaw, Toni Tikkanen, Mary Peterson, Nikki Long and Kathy Johnson all hit a double as Dishaw and Tikkanen went 3 for 4 and Peterson 3 for 5.

For Paradise, Hailey Hytinen homered as she went 5 for 5 while Kathy Maynard was credited with "awesome pitching."

Kaylyn Lammi went 5 for 5 with a home run and a pair of doubles as Quality Car Care outscored Tino's 31-15.

The winners' Connie Kontio was 4 of 5 with two doubles, while Tino's Taryn Myers homered and Aspen Tackman and Amber Salo each tripled.

Liz King and Bethy Larson both went 4 for 4 to lead Signs Unlimited to a 30-5 thumping of Palomaki Family Chiropractic, which got doubles from Katie Trudgeon and Tara Roberts.

In Class A, Katie Rankinen hit an over-the-fence homer along with a triple as Congress Pizzas baked up a 25-10 win over Pasquali's, whose Jess Geist had a pair of hits.

In another "A" encounter, Nicole Christensen matched Rankinen with her own over-the-fence home run as Barrel + Beam rolled up a 26-7 triumph over Jasper Ridge Brewery.

Christensen finished 4 for 5, which teammate Jackie Skradski also accomplished as the latter hit a triple and double and scored four runs.

Meanwhile, the winners' Nicollete Schultz not only went a perfect 5 for 5 and hit a triple and double, but she collected an eye-popping 10 RBIs. Teammate Bobbi Ayotte, who doubled, and Krystle St. Andre also went 5 for 5, while Janet Koski was 4 for 4 with four runs scored and Tia Mattila doubled.

Jasper's Taylor Oakland hit a triple and scored twice, while teammates LeAnn Saarela, Erika Bjorne, Amber Emanuelson and Lyndsay Bleau all went 2 for 3.

Macey Nault, Jamee Gobert and Libbie Doney all homered as Dave's Collision-Jack's rolled to a 24-9 victory over LaCosse & Associates, which saw Jenna Wedgworth also homer and Jordan Kowalski knock out a pair of doubles.

And Hannah Holma collected three RBIs, Stacie Kruse scored four runs and Tiah Pusakulich tripled to lead Screened Image-Barr's Bar to an 18-12 win over River Rock, which got a double from both Brandi Maxon and Kenzie Karki.
