Marquette battles Soo, rain-soaked field to get 4-1 win

By Journal Sports Staff

SAULT STE. MARIE — Only if the alternative had been snow could the Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team say the alternative would have been worse for a game last week.

The Sentinels fought through a rain-soaked field in Sault Ste. Marie to defeat the Blue Devils 4-1 on Thursday.

“Our team did a great job of staying composed given the conditions of the match,” MSHS head coach Laura Wayland said in an email detailing the result. “We continue to improve each game and implement what we work on in training.

“We are proud of this group for their continuous energy and effort.”

Senior Ellarie Thierry and freshman Preslie Mason each had a goal and an assist for Marquette, which evened its record at 2-2-1 with a game that was scheduled for Tuesday evening in Kingsford.

Thierry assisted on a goal by junior Anabel Ollila before scoring an unassisted goal of her own, while Mason assisted one by senior Alyson McCarthy as she also had an unassisted tally.
