ESCANABA — The iron ore shipping season is getting off to a busy start in Escanaba, according to Dean Choquette, ore superintendent at the Chicago & North Western terminal. The Inland Steel freighter Wilfred Sykes was docked Tuesday, taking its second load of iron ore since Saturday. Currently, Escanaba is the only dock open on the Great Lakes. Opening of shipping was delayed because of unusually thick ice on Little Bay de Noc and Green Bay.

MARQUETTE — Marquette to be base for 100-foot vessel carrying 23 men. From the blue waters and coral sands of the Spanish Main, where it had patrolled its section of rum row to keep out liquor runners from Cuba and the Bahamas, the 100-foot coast guard patrol boat, Nansemond, is to be transferred to the Marquette station. The Nansemond is diesel-powered, and carries of crew of 20 crew and 3 warrant officers. It s coming to Marquette will mean the location of about 10 additional families in this city. It will be used in rescue work over the territory from Keweenaw Bay to Whitefish point.
