UNIVERSITY CENTER — Personal bests were established, school records were set and NCAA national meet qualifying standards were met by the Northern Michigan University track and field team at the Jet’s Pizza Invitational held at Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Saturday.
With most events held Saturday, NMU’s Madi Szymanski hit an NCAA provisional mark in the 3,000-meter run that was better than the provisional mark she hit the week before.
This time around, she clocked 9 minutes, 42.81 seconds. Other NCAA provisionals were set by Ellyse Wolfrath in the 60 hurdles in 8.67 seconds, and in the distance medley relay in 12:04.11 by Gianna Hoving, Ciara Ostrenga, Beverly Harper and Szymanski.
Wolfrath’s and Szymanski’s individual times also set school records.
Wolfrath’s 60 hurdles NCAA time, the 12th best in NCAA Division II this season, actually came in the preliminaries as her finals time of 8.75 won the event.
The distance medley relay quartet set a time that’s fifth best nationally, too.
Szymanski finished third in the 3,000 with her time in the top 15 in the country.
Marquette Senior High School graduate Baux Truckey was second in the 60 dash in 7.78 seconds as she also made the finals in the 200, finishing fourth in 25.15.
Hoving placed fifth in the mile in 5:09.43, while Negaunee High School product Talon Prusi was sixth in the 5,000 in 18:48.84.
In field events, Leah Root won the triple jump for the second time in two weeks, reaching 10.53 meters (34 feet, 6.5 inches), while in the pole vault, she cleared 3.46 meters (11-4 1/4) for fourth.
Teammate Rebecca Lane was sixth in the pole vault after getting over at 3.16 meters (10-4 3/8).
The Wildcats return to SVSU this weekend for the WCW Tri-Meet on Saturday. The WCW represents the first letter of the mascot of the three participants — the Wildcats, SVSU Cardinals and Wayne State Warriors.
