MARQUETTE -- Westwood defeated host Marquette 7-1 in girls tennis Wednesday and the Patriots coach was pleased with her team's effort.
"The four doubles match was some of the best four doubles play that we've seen all season," WHS coach Sarah Massie said. "The match was tight the whole way and I thought Taylor (Jackovch) and Kaya (Etelamaki, No. 4 doubles) did a great job of staying focused and just battling every point. They got to end the meet with both teams watching and had some long points."
MSHS coach Karl Thomsen said: "Today was the type of tennis that is a joy to watch; two competitive teams, capped off by the marathon 3-setter at the No. 4 doubles flight. Our girls, Eva Sjoholm and Mylee Muscoe, took a major step today despite the loss. I am super proud of how they executed their game plan and battled until the end.
"Down a flight at No. 3 doubles, Laura Barsch and Aubree Blackburn continued to grow. It has been very fun this year to watch their tennis I.Q. evolve," Thomsen said. "Overall, my big takeaway from today's meet is that our compete level was really good. Our objective now is to keep that intensity we had today and clean up a few mistakes. If we can do those two things, the end of the year should be really fun and interesting."
Massie added: "We had to dig in and fight in some tight moments today and I was happy with the toughness the girls showed. I think we're building the confidence we need to be able to beat tough opponents."
