Woman drowns, girl rescued from Lake Michigan

ST. IGNACE — A 28-year-old woman drowned and a 13-year-old girl was rescued Thursday in Lake Michigan near U.S. 2, just west of Pointe Aux Chenes Road in Moran Township, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police.

Chippewa County Central Dispatch advised around 4 p.m. Thursday that there were two people swimming far away from shore

“Central Dispatch advised the individuals were a 13-year-old and a 28-year-old and that it looked like they were still above water, but they could barely be seen,” police said in the press release.

Troopers responded to the scene along with emergency medical services, fire department personnel, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office.

“Troopers observed the 13-year-old being helped to shore by two bystanders, she was conscious and breathing,” police said in the release. “MSP troopers and sergeant went into the surf and attempted to find the 28-year-old victim in the water but were unsuccessful. The 28-year-old victim was eventually spotted floating by a firefighter. A Mackinac Island rescue boat brought the victim onto their boat and immediately began CPR.”

However, the 28-year-old victim could not be resuscitated, police said.
