Three swimmers rescued at Little Presque Isle

MARQUETTE — Three people were rescued from the Little Presque Isle area today.

The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post said troopers were dispatched at about 1 p.m. to an incident in which three subjects had been swept out into the Lake Superior in a strong undercurrent from Little Presque Isle.

The swimmers included one 38-year-old male, an 11-year-old male and a 10-year-old female who were observed by bystanders to be about 150 yards out from the shore screaming for help.

A female beachgoer on shore swam out to the three subjects who were drifting away to rescue them while her boyfriend called 911.

The female was able to get the endangered swimmers all together and get them back to shore. Other beachgoers on the shore swam out to the exhausted swimmers to give them life jackets and flotation devices.

The three subjects were brought back to shore as EMS, Michigan State Police, officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Coast Guard and the Marquette Township Fire Department units arrived on the scene.

The two juvenile swimmers were medically cleared and released on the scene to family members. The adult was transported by EMS to Upper Peninsula Health System for a medical evaluation.
