Ex-pro Jensen featured at Marquette tennis instruction

More than 30 youngsters participated in the FIT tennis camp held at the Marquette Senior High School courts on June 10, seen here with coaches for the event. The feature of this three-hour-long free camp for boys and girls ages 5 to 14 was coaching from former Grand Slam tennis champion and current ESPN tennis commentator Luke Jensen, a Grand Rapids-area native. Youngsters learned the game’s basics while polishing their skills with help from volunteers from the sponsoring organization, the Marquette Tennis Association. A Thrivent Group grant provided lunch for all participants. Later that afternoon, Jensen also headed an adult tennis clinic that helped raise funds for the Mickey Johnson Tennis Courts restoration project, which the MTA and city of Marquette are raising funds to rehabilitate tennis and basketball courts at Williams Park on Ohio Street in Marquette. The MTA, which has already raised more than $10,000, has agreed to raise $40,000 with the city seeking a grant for $110,000. For more information on the project, call Joe Havican at 361-9935.
