MARQUETTE – The Tri Media 12-under Pee Wee AA travel hockey team of Marquette improved to 15-0 this season with four wins during the weekend of Oct. 22-23 against teams from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Cade Bouws had two goals in each game the first day against a Soo Major team, both games resulting in 7-1 wins. In the opener, Marquette’s Brayden Grange also had two goals while Jake Garrow, AJ Bottari and Ethan Phillips added one goal apiece. Liam Beerman made 13 saves.
In the second game, Jack Sides was a two-goal scorer while Garrow, Phillips and Drew Dellies added one each and Beerman made six saves.
On Sunday, Tri Media took on a Soo Minor team and won both 12-0. Dellies had a three-goal hat trick in the first game, with Bouws, Sides and Phillips adding two apiece and Bottari, Grange and Caleb Bell netting one goal each. Beerman made 10 saves.
In the nightcap, Phillips, Sides, Grange and Owen Riipi had two goals each while Dellies, Garrow, Theo Adams and Joe Demattia all scored once. Beerman made 3 saves.
Post 44 Bantams 2nd
At the Grand Traverse Hockey Tournament held Oct. 14-16, the American Legion Post 44 Bantam AA team of Marquette finished as runner-up.
Marquette won four straight games before falling to the Traverse City North Stars 5-0 in the championship game. Brennen Hakkola turned aside 27 shots for Post 44 as its record improved to 4-4.
“We are only in our second weekend now and the kids have made great strides,” Marquette coach Jon Nebel said. “We still have plenty of room to improve, but nonetheless (this was) a great start.”
The Legion team opened the tourney with a 3-1 win over the Rochester Rattlers with two goals from Jaden Riley and one from blueliner Lucas Guertin. Jack Mattias and Cooper Anderson both earned playmakers as each assisted on all three goals. Goalie Carsen Hayes turned away 27 shots.
Next was a victory over the Grand Rapids Blades, 8-2. Abby Tollefson, Brayden Stannard and Cooper Anderson each had two goals while Riley and Hunter Perry had one each. Mattias picked up two assists with single assists credited to Evan Kroll, Joseph Luke, Connor Steer, Hogan Nemetz and Ansel Frost. Hakkola stopped 14 shots.
The final game of pool play was a 5-3 win over Fox Motors Blue. Mattias scored twice with Luke, Anderson and Riley each adding one. Jake Peterson and Kroll had two assists each while Guertin, Riley and Anderson had one apiece. Hayes backstopped for 12 saves.
In the semifinals, Legion won a physical, penalty-filled game against Northern International Hockey League rival Sault Ste. Marie Lakers. Behind three power-play goals, Post 44 held on for a 5-4 victory. Mattias, Nemetz, Tollefson and Stannard each scored a goal with Luke adding the game-winner late in the second period. Assists came from Riley, Steer, Tollefson, Nemetz, Andrew Fedrizzi, Frost and Stannard as Hayes stopped 32 shots.
Next up for Marquette are NIHL league games against the Alpena Wrecks.
