Tri Media icers win TC tourney

MARQUETTE – The Tri Media Under-12 Pee Wee AA travel hockey team of Marquette Junior Hockey won a tournament held in Traverse City recently.

Coach Mike L’Huillier’s charges defeated the Traverse City North Stars 2-0 in the championship to capture the title and improve to 11-0 this season. Drew Dellies and Owen Riipi scored for Tri Media, while Liam Beerman made 21 saves in the shutout.

Earlier, Marquette needed a shootout to defeat the Troy Sting 2-1 in the semifinals. Ethan Phillips scored the locals’ lone regulation goal, while Cole Ranta and Riipi scored in the shootout. Beerman made 19 saves along with four of the five shots taken at him in the shootout.

In pool play, Marquette defeated Midland 3-0 with Dellies, Caden Bouws, and Jack Sides scoring for Marquette and Beerman making nine saves.

Marquette also beat the Grand Rapids Blades 20-0. Riipi, Sides, Ranta, Phillips, Dellies, AJ Bottari, Caleb Bell, Brayden Grange, Joe Demattia, Colin Nemacheck and Dylan King all scored in the barrage, while Beerman was only called on to make four saves.

The Friday opener saw Tri Media blast the Troy Sting 9-1. Ranta, Grange, and Jake Garrow each scored twice, while Bouws, Bell and Phillips had one apiece. Beerman made 18 saves.

This weekend, Marquette hosts the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Junior Greyhounds major and minor teams.
