Kramer, Maanika lead Cliffs’ upset

ISHPEMING – Karla Kramer and Carley Maanika led a powerful attack with both going 5 for 5 as Cliffs Natural Resources won its third game of the season, 18-12 over Jubilee Foods in Class A of the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Aug. 10.

Kramer and Cassy Sandberg each homered for the winners, while teammates Ashley Pietro and April Lawer both went 4 for 5.

Jubilee’s Christina Rader was 3 for 3 and Courtney Finkbeiner 3 for 4.

In another Class A game, Tiah Pusakulich was 3 for 3 with an over-the-fence homer to keep Cognition Brewing Co. in first place with an 18-0 win over Venice 1, whose Chelsie Whealton was 2 for 2.

Buck’s Party Store remained a half-game back with an 11-10 nailbiter over Screened Image. Buck’s Libby Nelson, who tripled, and Debbie Zummak and SI’s Paige Yoho all went 3 for 4.

Anna Dompierre collected a pair of RBIs and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Sisters edged Jasper Ridge Brewery 8-6.

Anna Dompierre and teammates Sandie Whitford, who had two doubles, and Leah Dompierre each went 3 for 4.

Jasper’s LeAnn Saarela, Steph Abata and Vanessa Taavola all were 2 for 3 as Saarela and Taylor Watters doubled.

Bree Ranta homered to help Crossfit 906 squeak out a 7-6 win over the Negaunee Eagles, whose Susan Buttery-Jandreau, with a triple, and Amy Bazinette both went 2 for 2.

In Class B, Carla Honkala and Laura L’Esperance homered as Honkala Construction moved within a half-game of first place with a 15-4 win over Venice 3.

Honkala also tripled as Venice’s Sue Goldsworthy went 2 for 2.

Signs Unlimited pulled off a 9-6 upset of first-place Martin Sports as the winners’ Bethany Finnala was 3 for 4 and Sandy Carlson 2 for 4.

Martin’s Veronica Slone was 3 for 3 with a homer and triple, Ashley Asgaard 2 for 2 with a triple and Mitch Gray 2 for 3 with a double.

Lisa Niemi went 4 for 4 to lead Paradise to a 12-10 squeaker over Quality Car Care. Teammate Lynn Ball was 3 for 3 while Maria Stanaway homered.

QCC’s Penny Sozcey was 3 for 3 and Michelle Lammi 2 for 4 with a triple.

Nicki Frisk doubled and had two RBIs as Pasquali’s slid in for a 14-12 win over Dave’s Collision, whose Jamee Gobert had two doubles and three RBIs.

Chelsea Roberts hit a grand slam homer to lead AAA Insurance to a 21-12 win over Jack’s Teepee 1. Teammate Toni Tikkanen and Jack’s Mary Zhulkie also homered, while Jack’s Shari Mahoski had two hits.

In Class C, Taryn Moyle went 3 for 3 with two homers as Tino’s remained undefeated with a 21-7 win over U.P. Fabricating. Teammate Sarah Massie was 4 for 4 while Josey Moyle homered.

UPF’s Jessa Johnson hit a three-run homer.

Julianne Jarvi tripled to support winning pitcher Emily Rushford in River Rock Lanes’ 4-3 win over Eastwood, which got a homer from Anna Chipman.

Yooper Shirts stayed a game behind the leaders by hitting eight homers in a 27-6 blast of Willey’s Tire Shop, which got a triple from Bethany Firby.

Annette Gleason homered twice to lead Marquette Embroidery to a 20-16 win over Bertucci Construction, whose Kinsie Bertucci, with a double, and Hannah Bertucci each went 3 for 4.

Zyna Zyble and Kathy Zyble both went 5 for 5 to lead Wooden Nickel to a 20-0 whitewashing of Jack’s Teepee 2, whose Deidra Lackie was cited for good offense.

Shannon Wolf tripled in Rookies’ 18-0 blanking of Xccelerated Fitness, which got a double from Payton Drew.

Jenni Quayle, who homered, Maigen Orr and Mary Aho all went 3 for 3 to support winning hurler Kathy Gischia in Palomaki Family Chiropractic’s 11-7 win over Venice 2, whose Sarah Kurian was 2 for 3.
