CRYSTAL FALLS – Ryan Martin of Crystal Falls kept his Upper Peninsula Strongman title on July 30, but not without a fight from Chad Childs.
Martin needed a tiebreaker to repeat as heavyweight champion in the event held at Butler Potato Farm, located near Sagola.
Childs, from downstate Mayville, captured the 2015 U.P. Strongman middleweight title. Both men tallied 21 points after their scheduled events, which included farmer’s carry; overhead lift medley; push-pull prowler; stone over bar lift; and a medley of a sandbag carry, Conan wheel and tire chain lift.
Third place went to Dustin Fanson of Walkertown, Indiana, who trains at the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site in Marquette.
In the featherweight class, Justin Karnack of Ishpeming edged Alex Teichert of Crystal Falls for first place; at lightweight, Tim Martin of Crystal Falls retained his title; and at middleweight, Quintine Krepline of Brillion, Wisconsin, took top honors over Pat Bredy of Crystal Falls.
Crystal Falls’ Chad Martin won the masters open division, while the women’s open division was not held due to just one available competitor.

Middleweight (230 pounds) – 1. Quintine Krepline, Brillion, Wisconsin, 22 points; 2. Pat Bredy, Crystal Falls, 19; 3. Todd Neumann, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, 17; 4. David Larson, Foster City, 9; 5. Kevin Serkowski, Marquette, 8.
